Smoking is a big issue in today's society; after all, not only does it cause pollution, but it is also greatly damaging to the body of the smoker, and (to a lesser extent) those around them. Campaigns to raise awareness regarding smoking seem to have been largely successful in dissuading younger people from getting into smoking, as well as helping those who are already caught within the vicious loop of addiction to escape. However, there is one aspect of smoking that seems to be considered less than the health ramifications: the littering.

Cigarettes are actually the most littered item in all of Britain, outstripping competitors such as drink cans and food wrappers.

Thankfully, we do have heroes who have noticed the problem and are attempting to help fix it and raise awareness, in particular hopes to collect a million cigarette butts along the Suffolk coast.

At the end of each day of collecting cigars, he takes the bucket(s) of them home in order to count them up. Throughout his time, he's been turning up figures ranging from 1789 to 3804.

Research from Keep Britain Tiny has suggested that just 38% of smokers in the UK know that cigarettes contain plastic (did you know?)

"We found that four million smokers admitted to putting cigarettes down the drain in the last month alone," adds the CEO of Keep Britain Tidy.

"You are in effect posting it out to the sea because it goes through the drain, into storm drains, into the water table, potentially through rivers, and then into our ocean."

The butt itself is a mixture of paper, ash, and the tobacco itself. Once you remove the paper, you'll be left with the filter, which is made of plastic.

While pollution only seemed to be getting worse the more science advanced, it seems that the world is starting to take serious notice of the issues and is beginning to try and turn them around. Projects such as this could be the start of a newer, cleaner era - are you going to be a part of it?
